7 steps to planning & periodizing for physical training

Planning is an integral part of what we do as coaches. This plan ensures we cover all elements of the athlete’s development toward the goals that the individual has set out for themselves.

7-STEPS:

  1. Determine Key Physical Elements required for the sport.

  2. Determine underlying physical traits or skills prior to development of these skills.

  3. Structure physical progressions like you would technical progressions and consider what order and how much time these may require.

  4. Refer back to the technical plan.

  5. Be flexible in the plan based on the athletes rate of adaptation and unexpected changes.

  6. Consider the stresses on the athlete associated with training blocks and competition.

  7. Incorporate the physical plan into the overall training plan of the athlete and provide it to other service providers to ensure all of the elements work together in favorably for the athlete.
